INTRODUCTION
(TO THE FIRST EDITION)
BY
MR. V. KANAKASABAI PILLAY, B.A., B.L..
AUTHOX OF
The Tamils Eighleen Hundred Years Ago;
Superintendent of Post Offices, Presidency Division, Madras.
17th February, 1899.
I have read a few pages of tho Sarvartha Siddhi (Abitbana Chintamani) or
Encyclopædia of Tamil Literature which the compiler M. R. Ry. Singaravelu
Mudaliar, Tamil Pandit, Pachaiyappa's Charities, kindly onered for my perusal
and found them very interesting, written in a simple and easy style, and
presented for the first time in the form of an Encyclopædia. As the book
Supplies a long.felt want, I have no doubt it will prove very useful to teachers
as well as to students of the Tamil Language. The author has spared no
pains in making the work as comprehensive as possible by consulting all the
Tamil Puranams and classical works which have been printed hitherto and by
condensing the information available therein to such a limit as to permit ready
reference. I have, therefore, great pleasure in recommending the work to
Tamil gentlemen, whose support the author may seek for the publication of
his work.
